Trauma and the 12 Steps - Updates and New Books!
My colleague Dr. Jamie Marich released the revised and expanded edition of Trauma and the 12 Steps. This book bridges the gap between the 12 steps and trauma-informed care. It provides an extensive toolkit of trauma-informed skills that explains how trauma impacts addiction, recovery, and relapse, honors communities who may feel excluded from the program, welcomes outside help from the fields of trauma, dissociation, mindfulness, and addiction research, and much more. I am honored to have written the Foreword to this much needed book
Dr. Marich and I collaborated on two companion books for this book, Trauma and the 12 Steps: A Trauma Responsive Workbook and Trauma and the 12 Steps: Daily Meditations and Reflections. Designed with a focus on trauma sensitivity, the workbook breaks down each step in a gentle yet action-oriented way. It provides reflections from Jamie and I on how we work the step, a teaching on how unhealed trauma blocks may make a step difficult, with solutions for how to address this, brainstorming activities for writing, expressive arts options offered in place or in addition to writing, and a meditation. The recovery meditation reader teaches you how to more effectively work a program on a daily basis. It offers engaging tools to implement as a daily recovery practice such as inspirational quotes, trauma-informed reflections, 3-5 minute meditations or expressive arts practices, and prayers or intentions.
