It’s Always EMDR Therapy: The Case for EMDR as a Complete Psychotherapy
My conference presentation at the 2019 EMDRIA Conference is now available as an Online Course through the new EMDRIA On Demand program. Click HERE to learn more and to register. You will have the opportunity to watch the 90-minute presentation and then take an exam afterward for 1.5 EMDRIA credits. The cost for EMDRIA members is $50 and for non-members is $75.
Course Description: This presentation reveals the potential for EMDR therapy to be used as a comprehensive primary clinical operating protocol. Past studies have missed the point for EMDR therapy to be used as not just an adjunct therapy, but as a standalone system of healing. Evidence supports each of the eight phases of EMDR therapy and shows it as applicable to treat the whole person. Through case study and research, the overarching systemic use of the Eight-Phase Protocol and Adaptive Information Processing model of EMDR therapy as the primary methodology and theoretical orientation of treatment centers or group practices will be explored. This presentation became the source of a chapter in Dr. Marich’s and Dr. Dansiger’s book, Healing Addiction with EMDR Therapy: A Trauma-Focused Guide.

I could not have imagined the evolution of my vision for a new template for addictions treatment centers to have transformed the way that it has. My presentation at the 2019 EMDRIA Conference in Orange County, CA, from September 12th through September 15th, 2019 will be reflective of this transformation. It's Always EMDR Therapy: The Case for EMDR as a Complete Psychotherapy, is a culmination of my past two presentations at the 2016 and 2018 EMDRIA Conferences on the MET(T)A Protocol. Making the case for EMDR therapy as a complete system of healing is the next outgrowth and conclusion of these past EMDRIA Conference presentations, and my hope is that it can pioneer the way for the mental health and substance use disorder treatment field to implement this evidence-based best practice for substance use disorders and other addictive disorders.
It is time for us to honor mindfulness based EMDR therapy, which has grown faster than almost any other mental health therapy, including psychoanalysis and behavioral therapy, as the complete psychotherapy that it is. One of the most researched treatments, there are over 300 research articles, mainly studies, and 95 review articles on EMDR therapy, which has been healing suffering for over thirty years. Bringing to light the evidence base of its efficacy for treating various clinical conditions, this presentation embraces EMDR therapy as a complete psychotherapy and makes the case for it to be implemented not just as a treatment approach but as a standalone treatment, like CBT and DBT. I look forward to revealing the best kept secret in the human services treatment industry with you.
